Remembering

Jim Dornan

1948 - 2021

Welcome to Remembering Jim Dornan.

This website has been set up by Jim’s family so that friends, colleagues, and the countless lives of those Jim had touched who wish to express their message of condolence and peace can do so.

The outpouring of support globally since his unfortunate passing on March the 15th, is testament to what an inspiration in life Jim was both personally, as a Father and a Husband, and professionally as an internationally respected and renowned expert in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

About Jim

Jim began his medical career qualifying in 1973. His hard work and determination led him on to various senior positions with both the Queen’s University and Ulster University in Northern Ireland.  Jim regularly lectured both in Ireland and internationally.

In 2004 Jim was elected Senior Vice President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, where he helped develop Global health initiatives, including the establishment of an emergency obstetrician that provides lifesaving skills for medics, midwives and nurses in nations with scarce resources. Jim is survived by his son Jamie, his two daughters Jessica and Liesa, and his wife Samina.

At the age of 73 Jim sadly passed away on March 15th 2021, after battling Covid-19.

Jim Dornan seemed like a beautiful soul and my heart broke when I heard of his passing. I wish the Dornan family and friends peace, strength and sincere condolences at this difficult time. I love how he also didn’t have to audition for his acting roles, yet Jamie had to, which made Jamie and others laugh about it. All the things Dr Dornan did and the way he lived life, seemed like he was beyond stellar! Gone too soon and may he Rest In Peace. Love to the Dornan’s ❤️ Sincerely, Codi West

Writing words in memory of a loved one is very difficult, but even more so if this person is an exceptional doctor, who has overcome many obstacles in his life, overcoming them all, but unfortunately not this time. We embrace the pain that has affected his family and heartfelt condolences.

My deepest sympathy to the Dornan family. I did not know Dr. Dornan but when I have listened to Jamie’s interviews I could since the great love he had for his father. I live in Kentucky, USA but the respect that Jamie gives people you could tell he was raised by a great man. May God give you comfort during this sad time. Keep memories alive. Hug your loved ones and keep them close.

As a retired RN I wish that I would have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Dornan. From all the comments I have read he sounds like he would have been the best kind of doctor to work with. Funny, compassionate and not at all carried away with his ego like some doctors can be. I send my deepest condolences to his family. Keeping him and all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

  • Trea

I wish the Dornan family a lot of strength in this difficult time❤

RIP Professor Jim Dornan, I never met you personally but having read and heard so much about you I can tell that you were a wonderful human being and will be sorely missed by your family friends and colleagues. To Samina, Jim's children and grandchildren please accept my sincere condolences on this massive loss to your family. To Loisa, Jess and Jamie, believe me when I say I know exactly how you feel. Your mum Lorna died the week before my mum in 1998, fourteen months later my dad also passed away, it is absolutely devastating when this happens and I still love and miss them every day.. From what I have read your Dad was a larger than life character, focus on the good memories, it will help the hurt to fade, it doesn't go away, but as you already know......you just learn to live with it. Take care of each other, again I am so, so sorry for your loss.

To the family of Jim Dornan, my sincere condolences on the loss of your beloved father and husband. Everything I have read about Jim Dornan is a testament to the fact that this man was a beautiful, kind, intelligent soul full of life and love for his family and friends. I never met him but I feel like the world has lost a wonderful person who served and helped so many people and organizations. To say that I am devastated right now is an understatement... today we lost a friend.. a dear one.. one that came to our lives 6 years ago through some unconventional ways and become one of my favorite people in the world. My Irish buddy 🇨🇮Such a gentleman with a sweet soul, extremely generous and funny and with a dry sense of humor. A caring cheerleader throughout our journey into parenthood. From helping us during our two trips to Europe for IVF to even serve as a reference and write a letter on our behalf to our adoption agency. I loved exchanging pictures and videos of Liam with him and read his funny comments and lectures to me 😂 He loved watching Liam grow up... Oh my ! how I am going to miss our regular chats on whattsapp, messenger, emails... our political debates 😆, soccer matches, parenting advices etc... He gave us such a priceless gift last year when Liam turned 1 ... he made a video especially to Liam of him singing “oh Dani Boy”... a true Irish song... it was the most adorable thing! 💕Always very private but caring and showing his love. One of my dreams was to go back to Northern Ireland to see him again but this time to have him hold Liam ... Broken-hearted this won’t happen now.. 😭😥 Jim, it was more than a honor to know you and to call you my friend. You were someone who knew how to live and enjoy life , who was head over hills for your wife Samina, was a happy Obgyn but was now thrilled to be teaching medicine...You adored your grandkids and was always so proud of you “kids”. I am so happy you were able to see and enjoy Jamie’s success . Like you always said.. “Do all you can do...and then move on....and don’t look back.” You never looked back Jim.. and you had a meaningful and wonderful life. I still can’t believe that I spoke with you less than 24 hrs before you were gone.. 🥺 We will miss you so much...💔🥰

No matter how old you are, the loss of a parent is like no other and leaves an irreparable hole that can’t be filled. I never personally met Jim nor knew him but the comments both on here and other social media platforms have made me laugh, smile and cry so can only imagine what a kind, warm hearted man he was. I truly hope they bring a small amount of comfort in an unimaginable time of sadness. He seemed to be a larger than life character and has left a remarkable legacy and a great many people with wonderful memories. Lots of love to the entire family 💛 “The life given us by nature is short, but the memory of a life well spent is eternal”

  • Nicola Green

I didn't know Jim Dornan personally, but what I have read over the past few days you can tell he was a very much respected & loved man and he has left a lasting legacy with what he achieved professionally. His 3 children should never forget what a wonderful father they had and should just treasure all those happy memories they had, Jamie always spoke with so much love & admiration for his father & you can see he has inherited his dad's charm & sense of humour. Sending my deepest condolences to all the Dornan family ❤️🙏❤️

  • Natasha Silvester

Rip Jim, thoughts are with your family at this sad time. Covid is taking far too many people's loved ones, it's so hard. Fly high with the angels, god only takes the best x

There are never the right words to say when someone passes away except to express how very sorry I am to the Dornan family on the passing of Professor Jim. I never met Dr. Dornan personally but through his son Jamie and his many interviews I came to know that his dad was his best friend, mentor and golfing buddy. He always expressed how much he loved his dad and how brilliant he was and such a positive role model for Jamie and everyone Jim came in contact with. His love as a father, grandfather and husband will live in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be sorely missed and the medical field will be a better place because of Professor Jim. Because of Jamie, Jim and Jessica I became a patron of NIPanC. Having lost 2 relatives to pancreatic cancer I know what an important role NIPanc plays in finding a cure. When my husband passed away a few years ago I found this saying that touched my heart. I hope it touches the family's heart too. Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free I'm following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard Him call I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day To laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way I found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void Then fill it with remembered joy A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss Ah, yes, these things I too shall miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow I wish for you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life has been full, I've savored much Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me God wanted me now, He set me free! I pray each day that the family will find solace in the love they shared for Jim. Rest in peace Professor Dornan.

Thinking of Jim’s family and friends at this sad time XX ‘If ever there is a tomorrow that we are not together, There is something that you always must remember: You are braver than you believe, Stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we are apart..... I’ll always be with you’ From Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne
